Committees and working groups, the beating heart of UITP
UITP’s Committees and Working Groups offer a unique source for expertise and platforms to debate global topics. And 2022 was no exception! With an incredible 31 Regional, Stakeholder and Thematic Committees and over 70 focused Working Groups all discussing today’s key issues, UITP is truly a hub for knowledge.
The launch of the Cybersecurity Committee was a highlight, showcasing UITP’s dedication to tackling cyber threats with a diverse range of public transport stakeholders.
While the COVID-19 pandemic put the breaks on many in-person events, it was great to see so many resuming and providing valuable, personal experiences for our members. Almost 80 Committee and Division meetings were held in 2022, with 38 meetings in-person. From Aberdeen, to Singapore, Newark and Israel, UITP is thankful to all our hosts for their hospitality and eagerness to present their best practices in the form of sustainable, transport developments.
Rural mobility challenge
Combining public transport with more tailored on-demand and shared mobility services, including peer-to-peer and volunteer-based solutions, can go a long way towards overcoming long-standing mobility deficits in rural areas. Successful strategies must embrace the different scale and needs of rural areas, and build upon a set of preconditions for combined mobility solutions to fully unlock their potential. This Knowledge Brief provides the main takeaways from UITP members.
Rail success stories
The ‘Rail Success Stories’ report is to share positive and successful examples of rail service development in cities, metropolitan areas and regions worldwide. It showcases how rail continues to contribute to citizens’ quality of life despite the devastating impacts from COVID-19, and how positively it has impacted the areas, acting as a booster for the economies, the fight against climate change and the societal challenges at large. Thanks to the 53 UITP members for their contributions!
Demand management
Demand management has a potential to be a major strategy and policy tool for solving mobility challenges by influencing demand for mobility. From measures to manage traffic, movements and trips to required use of regulation, financial incentives and taxes, demand management improves the operating system’s efficiency and resiliency all while reducing traffic congestion. UITP demands five policy actions to drive decision makers in the right direction!

Spearheading research and innovation to advance public transport
Research and innovation (R&I) are key to continuing to improve quality of life around the world and bring added-value solutions to our sector and society. UITP is recognised as a world leader in R&I for public transport, having been a leading partner in a wide range of projects for many years. With projects following sector trends and needs, we provide our members and the wider urban mobility community with knowledge that has a clear focus on sustainability, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction. From electric mobility to security and from automated mobility to accessibility, UITP covers all key topics to keep advancing our sector.
Below are some of the projects we want to highlight in 2022. A special mention is for the projects awarded late 2022 and commencing in 2023: eBRT2030 (electric and innovative BRT), UPPER (unleashing the potential of public transport) and R2DATO (autonomous tram operations).
NEW PROJECTS LAUNCHED IN 2022
FAME, Stations of the Future, TEADAL, TRANS-SAFE, ULTIMO
Funded under the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the TUMI E-Bus Mission supports 20 ‘deep dive’ cities in the Global South in their transition towards electric bus deployment. The project aims to trigger change in over 500 cities by 2025, leading to the procurement of more than 100,000 e-buses and resulting in a reduction of more than 15 megatons of CO2 emissions.
The DATA4PT project aims to advance data-sharing practices in public transport by supporting the development of data exchange standards, to fulfil the needs of multimodal travel information service providers. In DATA4PT UITP plays a key role in the definition of Urban Mobility Data spaces and standards harmonisation.
The EU-project ULTIMO seeks to set the foundations and deploy the very first economically viable large scale, on-demand and user-oriented automated vehicles (AV) public transportation services. By taking a holistic approach to AV deployment that considers all elements in a cross-sector business environment, ULTIMO wants to truly unlock the integration of AVs into cities.
